After a degree at Cambridge University I taught English and Latin for three years but, realising that my long held passion for carving needed to be developed, I studied carving at the City and Guilds of London Art School under William Wheeler. Since 1968 I have divided my time between carving wood and stone sculptures for exhibition or on commission and teaching.
In 1978 I was invited to return to the art school to teach part time in the carving department.
I was head of department from 1985 until 1995 and I still teach there one day a week.
In 2003 for my teaching at Missenden Abbey Adult Residential College, Buckinghamshire, U.K.
I was the first recipient of the President of the City and Guilds of London Institute’s Award for Teaching and a Medal of Excellence.
My work covers a range of genres, including the human figure and traditional ornament but concentrates on abstract sculptures in wood and stone with a focus on the invention of new forms.
Many pieces are concerned with endlessness in time and space and with regeneration.
My sculptures appear in private collections in Great Britain, Europe, Canada, Australia and the USA.
